"What Are We Eating?" A survey combined with a chemical study on our daily diet

ORANJESTAD- To gather data from our community on the goods and foods that people in Aruba consume most frequently, the Department of Public Health, in partnership with IBISA, CBS, and WEB Aruba N.V., will begin a comprehensive, scientific study called the Total Diet Study (TDS) between March 24 and June 30, 2025.

This study consists of 2 parts:

  1. A survey of what we eat;
  2. A laboratory study for the chemical part.

Following the survey, WEB Aruba N.V. will conduct a chemical analysis to determine the makeup of the foods we eat the most, identify the chemicals or materials we are exposed to through our diet, and determine whether there is a link to chronic illnesses like obesity, diabetes, or cancer.

CBS chose 500 addresses from all over Aruba for this study. They will receive a letter inviting them to participate in the "What Do We Eat?". A surveyor will visit the home over the next few days to select a resident to participate. Only eligible citizens under eighteen years can participate in this poll, and all information is confidential.

The implementation of the TDS is essential for various reasons:

  1. The study plays a crucial role in our food safety. By systematically investigating what substances we ingest through our food, we can identify the risk in time and adjust management.
  2. The study provides valuable information for policymakers and the food industry. The results help to make informed decisions about the safety of our food and its production.
  3. It influences consumer education. By providing information about what is in our food, we can make more informed and conscious decisions about our health and well-being.
