Several barrel organ players were honored on Musician's Day.

ORANJESTAD - The Department of Culture arranged on November 22, 2024, a lovely gathering at Fort Zoutman on Musician's Day, the Day of Saint Cecilia, the patroness of all musicians.

Several legendary musicians performed Cah'i Orgel with their families and barrel organs to honor them for their efforts to preserve our folklore via Cah'i Orgel music. 

The evening began with a speech by Mr. Arthur Kelly on the history of the Cah'i Orgel in Aruba, followed by a detailed explanation by Mr. Elias Halabi of the process of making a Cah'i Orgel, followed by an explanation and presentation of folk dances by Mr. Ferdinand Franca, and closed the first part of the evening with a beautiful poem dedicated to Cah'i Orgel recited by the young Tai Kong Trimon.

After a break in which music by Cah'i Orgel sounded, the Minister of Culture Xiomara Maduro of Culture took the floor to review the list of all the legendary persons who received recognition on Music Day from her. The barrel organ have been active for over a century. These young musicians preserve the tradition of barrel organ dedicated to playing barrel organ, and Wiri inspires other young people to continue with this beautiful tradition.

Recognized under the category of "Barrel organs active for more than a century,":

  • "The Porfiado" by Mr. Minguel Werleman has been active for 119 years and is the only barrel organ with nine parts per cylinder and 37 hammers. The barrel organ had five owners and is still active. 
  • "El Negrito Maldito" by Mr. Rodney Werleman,  is 118 years old and came from Italy. This barrel organ is a symbol of constant dedication. Rodney Werleman preserves his splendor and maintains the tradition of organ music that he inherited from his grandfather Ale Werleman in happy memory.
  • "The Diamond" by Mr. Hyginio Alejandro, better known as 'Patan' Farro, is 109 years old. This barrel organ is a symbol of constant use and dedication. Patan Farro is its owner but a restorer, a wicharero (drum and rake player), and an art lover.
  • "The Trovador" by Mr. Roberto 'Roque' Koolman, is a barrel organ that arrived in Aruba in 1920 from Italy. Roberto Koolman renovated its condition and preserved its history, maintaining the barrel organ's original name for 104 years.
  • "Mi Deseo" by Nelson Tiel, is a 116-year-old barrel organ from Novara, a barrel organ factory in Italy in 1907. The barrel organ has four cylinders nailed by Alphonso (Buchi) Boekhoudt.

Recognized as legends of the barrel organ:

  • Elias Halabi is an organ maker and cylinder nailer. Elias was born in Curacao but resides in Aruba and helps strengthen the brotherhood between Aruba and Corsou in the Cah'i di Orgel field. Elias owns several organs and also made the "Pequeño Diablito" organ.
  • Juan Curiel's barrel organ, "Nieva Maria," arrived in Corsou and participated in various cultural events.
  • Nelson Tiel, who owns the barrel organs "Istela" and "Mi Deseo." Nelson honors his family with the names of his barrel organs and preserves history and tradition at a higher level.
  • In a party and cultural setting, Denny "Den" Thijzen, a devotee of the Cah'i Orgel tradition, has a personal history with "Mi Amor," his devoted companion. 
  • Reginald 'Nai' Felicia with his barrel organ "Bucurui."
  • Nai organizes the famous festival "Let's Meet our Cah'i Orgelnan," which unites our community yearly in harmony with Cah'i Orgel.
  • Ruben Boekhoudt and his barrel organ "Flores de Colores," is an heir to a family of Cah'i Orgel, whose vibrant barrel organ reflects his creativity. 

Stimulus recognition went to the youngsters:

  • Igmar Maduro is the heir of "Flor di Macubari" and a young pioneer who writes new songs and is active in Cah'i Orgel festivals.
  • Joangelo 'Giovanni' Geerman, influenced by his uncle Esy Geerman, is mastering wiri and is preserving the art with his barrel organ, "Nos Herencia."
  • Jeromaine "Jerro" Paesch, who masters Cah'i Orgel with remarkable mastery, regularly plays to unite his family in our musical heritage.
  • Peterangelo Ras, who in 2021 organized a festival of Cah'i Orgel, "Nos Dushi Caha." Peterangelo is a wicharero who passionately promotes and preserves our tradition.

Minister Maduro thanks the Department of Culture for organizing the beautiful evening in which the legends of Cah'i received honors for their efforts to preserve and ensure that the music and history of the Cah'i Orgel can continue to resonate.
