Invitation to participate in “What Do We Eat?”

ORANJESTAD – Starting March 14, the first invitations to participate in the “What Do We Eat?” research study will be sent to various households in Aruba. Between March 24 and June 30, 2025, the Department of Public Health (DVG), in collaboration with IBISA, CBS, and WEB Aruba N.V., will conduct a Total Diet Study (TDS).

This is a comprehensive scientific study aimed at gathering information about commonly consumed products and foods in Aruba and analyzing the results related to chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

For this survey, CBS has randomly selected 500 addresses across Aruba. These selected households will receive an invitation letter in their mailbox to participate in the “What Do We Eat?” study. In the following days, a surveyor will visit the households that received the invitation to select one person from the household to participate. Only citizens aged 18 and older can participate, and all data will remain anonymous.

This study consists of two parts:

  • A survey on eating habits: A surveyor will visit the household twice to ask various questions about food consumption.
  • A laboratory study of chemical composition: Based on the survey results, WEB Aruba N.V. will research the most commonly used and consumed food products.

The implementation of the TDS is important for several reasons:

  1. Food safety: By systematically studying the substances we ingest through food, we can identify risks early and adjust management accordingly.
  2. Policy and the food industry: The results provide valuable insights for policymakers and the food industry to make informed decisions related to food safety and production.
  3. Consumer awareness: By providing information about what is in our food, we can make more informed and conscious decisions for our health and well-being.
