World Oceans Day 2024: Awaken new depths!

ORANJESTAD - On June 8, the United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day.

This year, the focus is on the theme "Awaken new depths," emphasizing the importance of better understanding the mysterious parts of the ocean and the crucial role it plays in the health of our planet.

The Department of Nature and Environment (DNM) recognizes the importance of finding solutions for ocean conservation. Therefore, it is working on the NBSAP, the "Nature Management Plan for Aruba," based on the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) that resulted from the conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15) in 2022.

The list of priorities with goals and objectives in the concept "Nature Management Plan for Aruba" includes objectives for the sea around Aruba. Islands like Aruba depend on a healthy ocean for tourism, fishing, and the general well-being of our community. But pollution, over-tourism, and climate change pose a considerable threat to the health of our seas.

How can we conserve the ocean?

  • Reduce the use of disposable plastic;
  • Seek sustainable products that are good for the environment;
  • Avoid using sunscreen products that contain oxybenzone;
  • Reduce water and energy consumption at home;
  • Participate in beach and sea cleanup actions or other conservation activities;
  • Educate yourself and others about the importance of conserving our ocean.

During World Oceans Day, organizations hold various activities to promote the conservation of our resources. Together, we can work towards a future where our ocean is healthy and vibrant for future generations.
