World Kidney Day observed on March 13

ORANJESTAD -March 13 is World Kidney Day, and the Department of Public Health (DVG) wants to raise awareness in our community that excessive alcohol can damage your kidneys!

Excessive alcohol causes:

  • Dehydration: Alcohol is a diuretic, which increases urine production and can result in dehydration. Without enough fluids, your kidneys cannot eliminate toxins well.
  • Toxic overload: Your kidneys filter out toxic substances, but excessive alcohol can put too much load on kidney function, causing an accumulation of toxic products in your body.
  • Electrolyte imbalance: Alcohol can imbalance sodium and potassium, which is essential for your kidneys to work properly.
  • High blood pressure: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure, damaging your kidney glands and increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease.
  • Risk of kidney disease: Excessive alcohol can increase the risk of kidney stones and chronic kidney disease.

Recommendation:

  • Limit your alcohol consumption! DVG recommends one glass per day, but NOT every day
  • If in doubt, talk to your doctor. Protect your health!
