World Kidney Day observed on March 13
ORANJESTAD -March 13 is World Kidney Day, and the Department of Public Health (DVG) wants to raise awareness in our community that excessive alcohol can damage your kidneys!
Excessive alcohol causes:
- Dehydration: Alcohol is a diuretic, which increases urine production and can result in dehydration. Without enough fluids, your kidneys cannot eliminate toxins well.
- Toxic overload: Your kidneys filter out toxic substances, but excessive alcohol can put too much load on kidney function, causing an accumulation of toxic products in your body.
- Electrolyte imbalance: Alcohol can imbalance sodium and potassium, which is essential for your kidneys to work properly.
- High blood pressure: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure, damaging your kidney glands and increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease.
- Risk of kidney disease: Excessive alcohol can increase the risk of kidney stones and chronic kidney disease.
Recommendation:
- Limit your alcohol consumption! DVG recommends one glass per day, but NOT every day
- If in doubt, talk to your doctor. Protect your health!
