Visit U.S. Consul General for the Americas

ORANJESTAD—The United States Consul General for the Americas, Mr. Ramon Negron, recently met with Geoffrey Wever, the departing Minister of Economic Affairs, Communication, and Sustainable Development. They addressed several significant economic topics for both Aruba and the U.S.

They emphasized continuing cooperation in the economic and security sectors. The United States and Aruba have a strong relationship, and Aruba is a popular travel destination for Americans. It is also home to several multimillionaire American investors, particularly in the travel and energy industries. It has contributed significantly to Aruba's economic development over the years. The good relationship with the U.S. is evident from the presence of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance at Reina Beatrix Airport. It is a privilege that Aruba shares with 15 other airports in 5 different countries. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance helps enhance the security of the U.S. and Aruba.

There is a need to maintain an open dialogue regarding economic cooperation. It is no secret that the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and the reactions of the affected countries, such as Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union, will impact the cost of living in Aruba. The increase in costs here is passed on to products through price increases, and seeing that the majority of products imported to Aruba come from the U.S., we will experience the effects of this.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is closely monitoring the situation and recognizing that it is an ongoing development, will continue to document and "update" the effects.
