There is no reason for concern in Aruba about Human Metapneumovirus.
ORANJESTAD - In recent days, international media have started reporting on a possible new virus circulating in China, Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV). However, hMPV is not a brand-new virus; it has been circulating globally since 2000.
In Aruba, the Department of Public Health (DVG) continuously monitors circulating viruses on the island through its surveillance system for infectious respiratory diseases, including Influenza A, Influenza B, RSV, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus, Rhinovirus, COVID-19, and HMPV. Depending on the time of year, there may be an increase in cases of respiratory infections caused by one of these viruses.
Based on the epidemiological data collected, DVG believes there is no reason for panic in the community or for introducing any measures related specifically to the hMPV virus. In 2024, 46 samples (2.3% of 2032) tested positive for hMPV.
DVG advises raising awareness and protecting yourself and others from all viruses or bacteria by maintaining optimal hand hygiene. Wash your hands, especially before eating, and avoid touching your mouth, eyes, and nose with unwashed hands. Also, avoid contact with people showing respiratory symptoms. If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms, stay home and avoid public places. Protect yourself and vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, newborns, and those with compromised immune systems or chronic illnesses.
DVG will continue monitoring threats to public health internationally, regionally, and locally to keep the community adequately informed.
