ORANJESTAD - Recently, Mr. Mauricio Boekhoudt presented his book IDOOR and Others: Aruba’s Aviation History 1923-1950 to the National Library of Aruba.

The book covers the history of aviation in Aruba from 1923 to 1950 and is in English. In December 2024, Aruba celebrated 90 years since the SNIP airplane landed for the first time in Aruba on December 24, 1934.

Mauricio Boekhoudt has extensive experience in all aspects of civil aviation, including air traffic management, airport and aviation safety, and emergency response. He has also worked as an air traffic controller and has more than 45 years of experience in the field. He completed the Airport Management Professional Accreditation Program (AMPAP) in 2009, earning the International Airport Professional (IAP) title.

Mauricio was also a member of the Dutch Expert Group AIS/PBN/ATM, which promotes cooperation between the ABC islands of the Dutch Kingdom in aeronautical information services, performance-based navigation, and air traffic management. Additionally, he was a member of the ACI Operational Safety Sub-Committee, the Netherlands Antilles Security Committee, the Aruban National Disaster Preparedness Planning Committee, and the Netherlands Antilles Navigational Aids Planning Committee.

One of his specializations was aerodrome and air traffic services safety management systems and aviation regulations. He was responsible for the Aruba Happy Flow, an efficient passenger flow process at Reina Beatrix Airport. More recently, he conducted an audit for compliance with the ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit Program (USOAP) Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA) in the Aerodromes & Ground Aids (AGA) on behalf of the Government of Aruba.
The National Library of Aruba has received five copies of the book IDOOR and Others: Aruba’s Aviation History 1923-1950, which will soon be available for its members.

Prologue:

“Dr. Johan Hartog, news editor and later librarian, never mentioned this historic event in his book "Aruba, zoals het was, zoals het werd—van de tijd der indianen tot op heden," published in 1952.

The fact that Aruba’s aviation history was unknown had concerned Mauricio for a long time. Throughout his years in aviation, he began to research the subject. Contrary to what many believe, there is extensive documentation on Aruba’s aviation history.”
