Signs and symptoms of measles

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - When a person comes into contact with the measles virus, the first symptoms appear 10 to 14 days after the contact.

Measles affects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. The initial symptoms last 4 to 7 days and include:

  • Runny nose;
  • Fever;
  • Cough;
  • Red and watery eyes;
  • Small white spots inside the mouth.

Between 7 and 18 days after contracting the virus, a rash appears that usually starts on the face and neck and spreads over the entire body. It lasts about 5 to 6 days, in most cases, before it disappears.

Most deaths resulting from measles are due to complications associated with the disease. Possible complications include:

  • Pneumonia;
  • Meningitis;
  • Blindness;
  • Seizures;
  • Ear infections;
  • Severe diarrhea with dehydration.

Anyone who is not vaccinated or those who are vaccinated but have not developed immunity can become infected. Unvaccinated children and pregnant women are at the highest risk of developing complications. If a pregnant woman contracts measles during her pregnancy, this can be very dangerous for both the mother and the baby and may result in premature birth.
