Prime Minister attended the Ministerial Round Table at the United Nations.
ORANJESTAD - Recently, outgoing Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes attended the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) of the United Nations.
The Commission on the Status of Women is an annual conference that brings together leaders, particularly female leaders, from various countries to discuss progress on rights for women and girls.
During the Ministerial Round Table, one of the most crucial conference meetings, ministers from each country spoke and provided updates on what they were doing regarding the rights of women and girls. The Prime Minister of Aruba explained that Aruba is placing great focus and attention on the position of women and girls. A Gender Policy was drawn up outlining their status, the steps needed to strengthen their position, and ways to create more opportunities for them. It is a matter of great importance, and while Aruba has made significant progress, challenges remain.
Furthermore, she elaborated on gender-based violence, which refers to violence against women simply because of their gender. She explained the actions being taken and the need to revise some legislation. The government, stakeholders, and NGOs are working diligently to finalize these legal frameworks.
The Commission on the Status of Women is the leading intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality, women's rights, and empowerment. It documents the realities of women's lives worldwide and establishes global standards on these issues.
When discussing women, the focus should not be solely on violence and obstacles. It is also essential to highlight opportunities, particularly in the technology field. Aruba has been working on this for several years through Futura, and while there are dangers and problems, there are also many opportunities for women and girls.
