Alert for fake news and deepfake images on social media
ORANJESTAD – Several fake news posts and deepfake images have been circulating on social media in Aruba. The National Security Service of Aruba (VDA) has detected a significant increase in fake news and manipulated content (deepfake) used to deceive the community.
One of the most common scams involves cryptocurrency fraud, where individuals are convinced to invest and later lose their money.
The Government's responsibility is to protect the community from this scam. Therefore, it urges the public to stay alert and follow essential steps and recommendations from the VDA.
How to Recognize Fake News and Deepfake Content
- Check the source of the news. A single source is not enough. Please verify the information through reliable and official media before believing or sharing it.
- Pay attention to images or videos. Deepfake content may look authentic but often has strange details, such as unnatural movements or audio that does not match.
- See if other reliable media have reported the same news. If a news story is not confirmed by official sources, it is best not to trust it.
- Use verification tools. Images and videos can be easily manipulated. Use a reverse image search to check if they are authentic.
- Be cautious with investment offers. Scammers are very creative in finding ways to steal money from people. Never invest without conducting thorough research first.
How Can You Protect Yourself?
- Do not share your personal information with unknown individuals or organizations.
- If you encounter suspicious news, report it to the VDA (11911) or the Aruba Police (KPA 11141).
- Stay informed and follow digital security campaigns to learn how to detect fraud.
