99% of child sexual abuse occurs within family or social circles.

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - Recently, the government declared April the National Month Against Child Abuse.

In the realm of prevention, enforcement, and awareness, the government, along with the National Commission for Child Abuse, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and foundations, has taken various measures to help prevent and combat this serious crime against our children.

However, sadly it often starts very close to home. Data and information obtained from cases of child abuse indicate that 99% of the perpetrators are someone known to the child. It could be a family friend, a friend of the parents, a new partner, an uncle, an aunt, a grandparent, or a stepfather. These are people close to the child whom the child trusts. They are the people whom parents entrust with the care of their children.

The most pressing problem lies not in the law, the government, or the courts but within the family. It is the responsibility of every family and every person close to the child whom the child trusts. Laws can change, but if within the family, child abuse is ignored or covered up, we continue to fail our children. We can only build a brighter future by preventing and opposing this crime against innocent children.

We must confront this uncomfortable and delicate truth. Be aware of who is caring for the children and recognize signs in the child or those caring for the child. By being aware, acknowledging the problem, and taking preventive measures, we can work towards a future where every child grows up in an environment free from the threat of abuse. Our children deserve the best.
