2024: Development, Progress, and a Safer Aruba
ORANJESTAD – For Police Commissioner Drs. Ramon Arnhem, it is crucial to reflect on the year 2024.
The year was full of accomplishments and advancements but also presented numerous challenges and areas that require further attention. However, it is possible to look back proudly at the positive developments within the police force and the substantial investments made to elevate the force to the next level.
Development and Investments:
Our force is in full development and working on strategic plans. We are professionalizing the police force and enhancing the quality of police work. This is achieved by investing in new courses and materials. Most importantly, we dedicate time to the people behind the police force. Our greatest asset is the police officers, our colleagues. We aim to be a good employer where employees can work satisfactorily and where they are the central focus. Like last year, we implemented numerous renewals within the police force. We invested in new vehicles for all departments of the KPA, new uniforms are on the way, new radios for every officer, new buildings, and various new materials. Most importantly, classes will soon start with the newly recruited police officers.
Decreasing Crime and a Safer Aruba:
This year, Aruba recorded only one murder case, a drastic reduction compared to 2023. Several serious crimes decreased during 2024, although some have recently seen an increase. The KPA remains committed to apprehending suspects and solving cases.
The conclusion for 2024 is that serious crime in Aruba has decreased compared to 2023. In 2023, it also declined compared to 2022. It indicates that Aruba is becoming safer in terms of serious crimes.
Improving Traffic Rule Compliance:
In 2024, Aruba recorded 13 traffic fatalities. Notably, alcohol consumption and speeding are significant traffic issues. Excessive alcohol use caused a large number of traffic accidents. Additionally, “hit and run” incidents have increased, even in cases where lives were lost. Many drivers speed, fail to give right of way or use their phones while driving.
The number of traffic accidents and fatalities increased in 2024 compared to 2023. This development is unfortunate, given the reductions seen in 2023 and 2022. Traffic safety remains a top priority for Aruba. We will continue working hard to prevent incidents and reduce the number of victims.
Two Major Events in 2024:
The police force successfully managed two key events in 2024: Carnival and the elections. The KPA focused on reducing arrests during the Carnival season and emphasized prevention. During the December 2024 elections, the KPA coordinated well and cooperated with all political parties. It maintained public order without any arrests. The KPA congratulates the community for their respectful and responsible behavior during these events.
Aruba: A Safety Pioneer in the Caribbean
The KPA has a strong intelligence position, sees and hears a lot, and has stopped many crimes while intercepting a lot of drugs. An international investigation found that Aruba is one of the safest places in the Caribbean, well-positioned for both locals and tourists to feel secure.
Be the Best Version of Yourself:
Crime does not pay in Aruba. Stay on the right path for yourself and your loved ones.
Making mistakes is human, but learn from them. There are various institutions where you can seek help. If you continue a life of crime, the moment will come when you are arrested and brought before a judge who will determine your sentence. Don’t let it come to that.
Chief of Police Ramon Arnhem is very proud of the hard work of everyone in the police force and deeply grateful for their efforts. They make a difference and ensure our community can feel safe in our beloved Aruba.
