Symposium Series: Slavery - Past & Present in Aruba

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - On May 29, 2024, at 5 p.m., the University of Aruba will host the next event of the Symposium Series: Slavery - Past & Present in Aruba.

This session is about unification and healing. By listening to the history of indigenous descendants and the slaves, the legacy of the slavery past becomes visible and discussable in our society today.

This oration will bring forward the personal history of how descendants have experienced the legacy of the slave past in their daily lives, communities, and environment.

In addition, it will reflect on the history of those who survived modern slavery, their struggle for freedom, and the daily challenges they face.

Understanding the past is a crucial step for reconciliation, acceptance, and healing. A multicultural society such as Aruba can provide a unique opportunity for unification, healing, and cooperation to combat modern slavery and eliminate existing divisions about the slavery past.

At this event, the speakers invite the audience to think critically about how we can achieve healing and reconciliation for all of Aruba's slavery descendants. What is the role of each resident, but especially the descendants, in keeping the slavery past alive in our conscience and the future generation?

The University of Aruba invites all interested parties to participate in this important and exciting event.
