CBS 2023-2024 Revenue and Expenditures Survey on Track.
ORANJESTAD - The eleventh (11th) visit period for the Income and Expenditure Survey is already underway, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
In October 2023, surveyors visited households in Aruba for the first ten (10) periods. One thousand seven hundred and one (1,701) households gave our eighteen (18) surveyors permission to enter and conduct the survey.
This survey, before the 2023-2024 one, occurred in 2016. With this new cycle, CBS will be able to give an overview of, among other things, how the consumption patterns of our population have changed over the past eight years. The data compiled during the survey is processed anonymously. CBS uses the results of this survey primarily to adjust the basic component weights of the consumption basket of the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Based on the evolution of prices and the weights of the CPI basket, CBS calculates the monthly CPI and the percentage change in overall prices (inflation). The price index is a crucial indicator of Aruba's economy. Elaboration of a CPI has three main goals:
- As a calculation method to compensate employees for loss of purchasing power, adjusting their wages, with the proportion of the percentage change of CPI, which is known as indexation;
- As a mechanism for adjusting components of nominal to real terms of gross domestic product (GDP) in the National Accounts;
- As a method or governments and or central banks to set inflationary targets.
This survey will also provide an overview of the needs of vulnerable groups in our community. In this way, the price index is essential for the population's social and economic welfare. Without a clear view of the purchasing power of our population, it will be challenging to act consciously in the event of adverse socio-economic effects.
There are still two (2) periods of visits planned to complete the 1-year cycle of research on household income and expenditures according to international recommendations. CBS counts on the continuous participation of our entire population.
It is important to note that all CBS surveyors have a badge and a uniform to identify themselves. If the surveyors are not wearing their uniform, they can always identify themselves with their badge.
