Agroforestry Project Continues on Saturday, October 12

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - In light of the success and reception of the Agroforestry project at schools, the Ministry of Nature is launching its second phase, expanding the project to more areas within our community.

In 2022, food gardens were installed where elementary school children could learn to plant, care for, and harvest vegetables and fruits. A total of 11 gardens were set up, which resulted in high participation from a large part of our community. Students, elders, teachers, neighbors, and volunteers came together to help establish these gardens and learn about agriculture.

Now, they will bring these food gardens to other areas of our community, such as social institutions, secondary schools, and neighborhood communities. There is a strong interest among adults in planting. This project provides opportunities for older adults, those living in difficult situations, and the general community to work with a food garden.

What are the goals of this project?

  1. To teach our people how to plant and harvest, thus raising the agricultural knowledge level within our community.
  2. To increase food security on our island. If locals learn to plant, they will learn to eat and live on our land.
  3. These points contribute to a larger plan to make our primary sector another economic pillar. Instilling these habits in our people will create a community prepared to strengthen this sector and build a robust market with many opportunities.
